Accessibility
I are committed to building accessible sites, which basically means building website that people with disabilities can use. I do so by ensuring that I follow, where possible, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, which means my website need to be:
- Perceivable - make the website and interface presentable to a user in a way that they can understand, navigate and interpret. In other words
it can't be invisible to all of their senses
. - Operable - the interface must be presented so a user can operate it without interaction they cannot perform.
- Understandable - build the website so the user can understand content and function.
- Robust - ensure the website works with the latest browsers available, have an element of backwards and forwards compatability without stopping access to the content.
Real-world implementation
The detail of these four categories are further subdivided into additional guidelines, which includes things like:
- If images are not displayed, an explanation of the image is shown instead and the website still has context and makes sense
- The language used in links makes sense in the context they are used and when read out loud
- Content is written in a way that users will understand, i.e.: an ssumed level of basic reading skills
- Structured and valid HTML is used for page content so your computer can understand the website fully
- Valid CSS are used for look and feel
- Careful use of JavaScript for behaviour means if this function is disabled my website still works
- Design sites so they are viewable in various screen resolutions or degrade gracefully
- Design sites that work in all modern browsers, eg: Firefox, and degrade acceptably in older ones
