Web standards
Web standards are a series of technical standards laid out by the W3C, backed up by a set of best practice guidelines that allow everyone to see the same things on the internet. They are important as they enable me to create quality, accessible, fast and easy to maintain websites. Alow me to elaborate:
- Quality - web standards allow website owners to maintain a high level of consistency across the site.
- Accessible - web standards in general allow websites to be used by as many people as possible therefore giving a wider reach for existing or potential customers. Read more about accessibility.
- Fast - with less, but more efficient code, the website is smaller and therefore quicker to load.
- Easy to maintain - by adopting web standards I separate the content (i.e.: the words and pictures) from the presentation (i.e.: look and feel of a site). Therefore ongoing maintenance is simplified by only updating a few files, rather than every web page.
Simply put web standards are the right thing to do.
